What is a Direct Support Professional (DSP) or Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) in the State of Maine?

A DSP or BHP is someone who works directly with people who have intellectual or developmental disabilities. We find top-quality professionals and train them specifically to fit our client’s needs.

The Position:

  • Full-time or Part-time
  • DSP $22/hour and BHP $25/hour
  • Health insurance for full-time team members
  • Community inclusion support skills such as: social events, safety, volunteering, advocating, and transportation

  • In-home support skills such as: cooking, cleaning, medication assistance, scheduling, attend medical appointments, shopping, transportation, housing, and budgeting

Requirements to become a Family First Developmental Disability Solutions DSP or BHP:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Be legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Pass a criminal, driving, drug, and background check
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Be able to provide three references
  • Own a smartphone
  • Able to keep online records and communicate via email
  • Have reliable transportation and proof of insurance
  • Have or willing to obtain CPR, First Aid, and other training as required per the ISP.
  • Valid Driver’s License and Social Security Card
  • One year of DSP or BHP experience required (with a certificate)

Upon hiring, the initial training plan includes Direct Care training and other required Maine training. All DSP or BHP names are submitted for background checks and cleared prior to providing any services. We ensure that Onboarding, Licensing Training, Parent Orientation Training, and all state-mandated requirements are met. The ISP will be developed with the individual, guardian, or parent to determine needs. Each employee will work with the parent/guardian to train and ensure each client has their needs met via the ISP. Staff needs to have a current CPR and First Aid certificate. Additional training may be needed as identified by the member’s ISP. We will qualify each employee with adequate and appropriate training for the tasks they will be required to do before working with clients.
